The central design motif of this piece was inspired by a shadow I photographed when visiting Manzanar, one of the camps where Japanese Americans were incarcerated from 1942-45. Manzanar was located in the cold, windy, dry, and bleak landscape of the California High Desert. Today, you can see the bones of lives lived there, including the ruins of painstakingly constructed Japanese gardens. In size and dimensions, this piece references the Japanese scroll and incorporates Boro stitching in lieu of binding.
The Shadow of Manzanar was accepted into the touring exhibition Stitching California, an exhibition of art quilts focused on the complexity of California.
